The Diversity of Human Experience

"Students will enhance their appreciation for and understanding of the rich

complexity of the human experience through the study of differences in

ethnic and cultural perspectives, class, race, gender, sexual orientation, and ability."

-University Studies Program

We, as a class have touched upon several parts of this rubric. I had the most interesting time with gender, utilizing it into several of my choice topics. We also discussed race and sexuality as areas of fascinating activity. I found these discussions especially useful as I entered a sociology class, and encountered another type of experience there. Certain people had their most profound effect upon me as they refused to look past their ethnocentrism, and simply could not see the problems that are inherent in our current society.

            The Color of Fear

This document was written in response to a video presented in class. I found it very interesting, and it sparked some lively discussions, to say the least. These men could only cooperate for short periods before going for one another's throats! It was an excellent way to jump start our discussion on race.

            Our Songs and Music: Fancy

We were asked to choose a song or piece of music that reflected upon our class or some of  the goals that it was based upon. This song applied very strongly to Diversity of Human Experience because, as it states here, hers was a lifestyle not often discussed. Hers was a negative beginning culminating in a long and fulfilled lifetime.
